Welcome to my corner of the internet. My name is Mary, and this blog is going to be focused around heavy construction equipment. Years ago, my husband and I ran a construction company together. Now we're semi-retired, and for the last ten years, we have been doing a bit of freelance work. I miss the big machines, and I decided to start a blog about it. If you work with heavy construction equipment on a regular basis, I plan to have tips and ideas in this blog that are designed to help you. Beyond Order Picking: Five Courses You May Want to Consider If You Want to Work in a Warehouse

An order picking course trains you how to find and pick up orders, and it can be a useful course to take if you are trying to get a job in a warehouse. However, on top of order picker training, you may want to enroll in a few other courses. Here are some key ones to consider:

1. English Proficiency Courses

If English is your second language, you may want to make sure that you are proficient before enrolling in order picker training or any other courses. Most of these courses have many hands-on elements. However, there also tends to be reading homework and written tests.

As a result, you may want to brush up on your English proficiency if applicable. Talk with the training centre where you are planning to enroll to see what the instructors recommend.

2. Forklift Training

Many warehouses use forklifts to move around loads and even to load or unload shelves. As a result, if you have experience with forklifts, you may boost your chances of getting a job. To that end, consider signing up for forklift training.

These sessions cover safety and operational tips regarding all kinds of forklifts. Depending on the course you take, you may learn about industrial lift forklifts, counterbalance forklifts, rough terrain forklifts, electric and petrol forklifts, and multiple other categories.

3. EWP Training

EWP stands for elevated worker platform, and that type of training can also be useful if you are trying to obtain employment in a warehouse. In EWP training, you learn how to use all types of elevated working platforms. That includes hinged, telescoping, and articulating machinery as well as equipment that combines those elements. 4. High-Risk Work Training

A high-risk work training course prepares you to test for your high-risk work license. In some cases, you may be required to complete EWP training first. However, these type of training can be useful in particularly large warehouses where there is a lot of height or in outdoor settings. High-risk work licenses authorise you to deal with rigging, scaffolding, cranes and such like.

5 Fall Prevention Training

This type of training gives you the skills you need so that you don't fall from scaffolding, forklifts or other heights. Some of the training may overlap with the safety tips you hear in the other courses, but in most cases, a dedicated fall prevention course goes above and beyond these other courses when it comes to falls.

With these types of classes, you may even become eligible for higher level jobs. To learn more, contact an employer to see what he or she is looking for, or contact a training centre to talk about the advantages of different courses.
